Obituary for Waverly Russell Cassell
Waverly Russell Cassell 93, son of the late Arthur and Inez Cassell of Yadkin, Virginia. He grew up in a loving home with one brother and four sisters all which preceded him in death. in Yadkin. He was a product of Deep Creek Colored School, Gilmerton Junior High, and Providence High School.
Waverly, like so many young men in the community, went to work in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, until drafted into the Army. He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He made his home in the Yadkin Community and became active once again in the Church he grew up in, Divine Baptist Church. Waverly has served in many capacities in the Church and was a past Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, Financial Secretary, Missionary, Chairman of the Deacon Ministry and was bestowed the title Deacon Emeritus.
Waverly was an all- around community person having been active in Church Civic work for forty- seven years. He was president of the Deep Creek- Parkview Civic League, the Chesapeake City Drainage Commission, the Welfare Advisory Board, a charter member of the Citizens Advisory Committee immediately after Chesapeake became a city.
He was a life long member of the NAACP were he held the position of Chaplain. Waverly was also a member of Chesapeake Forward where he also served as Chaplain, and Chesapeake Men for Progress.
Waverly was a past member of A. M. Jones F&AM Masonic Lodge.
Waverly loved the outdoors and was a avid sportsman and loved fishing and hunting was a past member of one of the oldest African American Hunting Clubs in the Winton Hunt Club, his favorite sports were football and basketball.
He retired from Civil Service as the Deputy Chief of Supply Naval Medical Command, Mid- Atlantic Region..
Waverly was the widower of Nettie Trice Cassell. He leaves to cherish his memories One Daughter; Sharon Cassell Robinson and her husband Rev. Richard Rodney Robinson of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. One Son; Vincent E. Cassell and his friend' Sheila Cuffee of Chesapeake, Virginia. Two Grandchildren Alexandria Danielle Robinson of High Point, North Carolina and Richard Brandon Robinson and his wife Johna'e Eberhart-Robinson of Apex, North Carolina. Two Great Grandchildren Sequoia Moore and Reese Brooklyn Robinson. God Children, Marsha Ann Briggs Foster and her husband Jimmie and Kelvin Walker and his wife Mia. Sisters in law; Marie McQuaig, Carolyn Walker and her husband Deacon Thomas L. Waler, Bernice Trice. Brothers in law Rev. Harold F. Trice, Sr. and his wife Artelia and Carl A. Trice.
He was preceded in death by his brother Hilton Clyde Cassell and his wife Sarah. Sisters; Hurley Cassell Gwen, Vivian Bly, Mary Wilson and her husband Benny, Jocelyn Cuffee and her husband Dennis. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
